Don't Move Firewood!

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s (APHIS) Hungry Pests campaign has partnered with the Nature Conservancy’s Don’t Move Firewood campaign for the second-ever Firewood Awareness Month.

The goal of Firewood Awareness Month is to raise public awareness about firewood movement as a forest pest and disease pathway.

According to Don't Move, people in "Arizona live in areas under quarantine for pests such as: emerald ash borer, gypsy moth, insects and diseases affecting pecan trees, or the imported fire ant and it is illegal to move any regulated items (most firewood is considered a regulated item) from quarantined zones out of those states and into Arizona.

Sixteen states in the Central and Eastern US prohibit bringing hardwood firewood originating from Arizona into their state, to prevent the movement of thousand cankers disease. Regionally important pests such as the polyphagous shot hole borer and the soapberry borer pose a threat to Southwestern native forests, and these pests can be moved on firewood- underscoring the importance of using local firewood."

So please, do not move firewood, buy or harvest it locally AND burn it locally!
